Using the knowledge he gained while studying sport and nutrition at AUT University, Gibran Janif is motivating members of his community and family to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
“Through my voluntary activities in the community, I get the opportunity to meet people from all age groups including youth. I always encourage people to eat well and stress the importance of being active – be it through sports, walking or swimming – whatever you enjoy doing the most.”
With a large South Asian community in Mt Roskill, Gibran is a great role model and is passionate about ensuring people can access and make the most of existing local resources such as the YMCA, gyms and swimming pools.
Gibran is also trying to change the eating habits of his family members, some of whom have diabetes.
“I buy healthy groceries for my family and throw out the food high in fat, salt or sugar! I also post healthy eating messages on the fridge as reminders to them.
“I have definitely noticed a change in their health. My grandmother has slimmed down and is more mobile, and so is my dad.”
Gibran was a former under 23 New Zealand representative for Korfball. He works in a patient support role for the Green Prescription programme.
