Ella Kumar decided to turn her life around when she was 17. Tired of feeling overweight, unfit and unhealthy, she attended an aerobics class with her sister, which sparked the beginning of an active lifestyle for Ella and a passion for encouraging others to improve their health.
Now Ella is active in the Mt Roskill community as netball coach and umpire. She also teaches community Bollywood dance classes.
Recently she took on a new role as the coordinator for a South Asian Healthy Eating Healthy Action programme.
“I try and teach the Indian community about healthy eating and nutrition because diabetes is so high in our community.”
At home Ella ensures that there is plenty of healthy options and she makes lunches every day for her children to take to school.
“By doing this it means they are less likely to eat unhealthily and it is cheaper!” says Ella.
For religious reasons the family follows a vegetarian diet, so Ella is always careful to include a variety of legumes and pulses to ensure their food is nutritionally balanced in order to fuel their bodies in the right way.
