My name is Lunetta Lach and I am a year 12 from Wellington Girls' College. I am a member of the Wellington Girls' College World Vision committee and this year, our World Vision event is the "WGC's 40 Hour Sweatshop," which is Wellington Girls' College's new and innovative fundraising World Vision event.
The 40 Hour Sweatshop is based around the 40 Hour Famine, and will be held in Civic Square during the nationwide Famine weekend - Saturday 28th May from 6am to 10pm. However, instead of asking girls to go without food for 40 hours, we will be asking them to come along to the Sweatshop and work in shifts around the clock, to create products to sell to the public.
The Sweatshop will be split into four stations, each producing a different item. The first station will be making bracelets, the second making bags and pencil cases, and the third making cushions and teddy bears. At the fourth station, we will be plaiting lengths of recycled material which will be wrapped around each other (like a rubber band ball) to create a giant globe, symbolising both our diversity, and the unity that is required to fight poverty. The Sweatshop will raise a lot of awareness for the terrible working conditions experienced by many around the world, as well as raising considerable funds for World Vision.
Through the Sweatshop, we hope to raise $20,000 for World Vision. Girls will get individual sponsorship to take part, whether it’s a lump sum, money per hour they attend, or money per item they make. In addition to this, we hope to obtain corporate sponsorship both for the event as a whole, and for each of the stations within the Sweatshop. We will also raise funds through selling the products that we make from the Sweatshop. An auction will be held in Civic Square during the Sweatshop (on the Friday), which will further contribute to our fundraising total.
Just $400 can buy seeds to help 100 children in East Timor to have food for an entire year. We would like you to publicise our event because through our event because in holding the first ever WGC World Vision 40 Hour Sweatshop, we hope to raise as much money and awareness for those around the world who are living in poverty. What we raise will make a real, tangible difference in the lives of these people, and this event will hopefully grow to become even more meaningful, and raise even more money in the future. Wellington Girls’ College is going hard out for the hungry with the 40 Hour Sweatshop, and we would really appreciate your support in making our event a success.
