Support Canteen This Year and Help Support Those in Need

CanTeen was established to ensure that no young person in New Zealand living with cancer should ever have to feel alone.

Living with cancer is traumatic at any time, but even more so for young people already facing challenges of identity, independence, education, relationships, intimacy and employment.

The entire cancer experience including transitions from diagnosis, treatment, hospitalisation and remission is likely to threaten adolescent development and challenge the coping strategies of young cancer patients, their siblings, parents and friends. Cancer is no longer a death sentence, but it can mean the start of a long process of treatment and years of uncertainty. Even survivors of childhood cancer may have reminders of their cancer experience to cope with during the complexities of adolescence.

Since its inception, CanTeen has had a clear focus on the needs of young people living with cancer. CanTeen's foundation was built upon the fundamental belief that young people - through meeting, talking and sharing their experiences - would be better able to cope with the uncertainties of living with cancer.

CanTeen believes the best people to support young people living with cancer are those who have 'been there, done that' or are going through similar experiences. Members - consisting of young cancer patients, their siblings and bereaved siblings between the ages of 13-24 come together to form a national peer support network throughout New Zealand.

Nineteen year old CanTeen patient member Haley Thomas shares her cancer experience.

“In April of last year I fell off a scooter and after a month I realised there was a small lump on one of my ribs. A doctor’s visit assured me it was just a rib repairing from the fall. A visit to Tauranga Hospital’s emergency department in August  confirmed that a grapefruit-sized tumor had grown around my rib and I was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma on 14 October.

It’s the kind of thing that I never thought would happen to me. I didn’t react at the time, my mind went blank. I parked my emotions, I had to be strong for my mum. Cancer has such a grim name and people see it as a death sentence. I chose to be positive, I chose to fight and I’m still fighting.

CanTeen has been there for me from the beginning. Staff and members have assisted with keeping me positive. I’ve lost 12 kilos, been through many rounds of Chemotherapy, lost my hair… it hasn’t been easy, but I’ve managed to stay strong thanks to the amazing support I’ve received.

Aside from the financial support CanTeen has provided, the peer support network is a relief during the tough times. I’m a normal teenager going through an abnormal experience. To be in an environment where this journey is familiar for those around me, with people who have “been there, done that”, makes it that much easier.”
