Here's a kids book (for younger kids) with a twist:
wolves by Emily Gravett.
It won some prizes and I must admit the first time I looked at it I didn't 'get it' (but hey I'm a guy.) Later I did... and I sent a copy to my sister who is a primary school teacher.
Whats interesting about this book is that it works with two different stories.. the written and the visual. The drawings tell a story quite different to what is told in the text... so the story is very much woven into the illustrations ie - it wouldn't work with out them
My sister tells me when she reads it to them and shows the pictures, the kids get in big discussion about it.. (there's a little bit of detective work involved) and whether its right for a book to 'lie' like that.
Another level is that the story is about a book (on wolves that a rabbit reads on the way home from the library.)
It also contains an actual library card as from the ol' days.. and naturally kids don't know what they are - so theres a little history lesson as well.
All up its more about an experience than a story.. so is rather clever... though I think it may work better for a group such as a school class.
..and it is not a 'goody' type story. (Actually its a little bit nasty.)
(oh.. and of course my sister 'got it' right away on the first read, doh !!)
