When our cat was diagonised with Diabetes Joybel, the vet thought at first he had Aids, which cats have a tendacy for, which is a HIV virus I suppose.
I don't know how he expected it of ours, he is neutered and kept in at night, with no strays around, not among any female cats.

It's pretty common in cats. It's not quite the same as the human version and is not transferable between cats and humans, but makes the cats ill and thin.

I was also very surprised that there was HIV amoung cats until very recently when I took my second girl for inoculation to a new vet. Although quite expensive how much value do we have on our pets. The vet explained that there was a high incidence in Christchurch, transmitted by bites and saliva amoung cats and as mandax mentioned not transmited from cat to human. I didn't know this when I got the first girl fully inoculated until I purchased the second so with washing each other I thought it rather wise to have them both vacinated in spite of them not open to contact with ferrel cats. Time is always too short with our four legged friends how long it be to loose them premature.

I have lost a cat to feline Aids is it is not a pretty sight. Now my 19 year old cat has it.. I rang the vet he has given him 48 hours maximum. It is gut wrenching . I deal with pet loss all the time as I have pet service which i run from home and among the services I offer is grief support. But when it is your own it is not the same.

I saw an Ad. in the local paper for a home needed for a cat with HIV. I never knew that cats could have this virus. I have read where Clamydia is common amongst Koalas'.
