Blinky, one thing I learnt when dealing with winz, if you feel that the person you are dealing with is ineffective or difficult, and some, but definitely not all, are, ask their name and then ask to speak to someonwe higher up. And keep doing this, sooner or later you will get what you are entitled to. And don't take any nonsense. When I was busdriving, I had a year off on doctors orders with eyetrouble (retina detachment ), When I started back to work they put me on parttime for a while and I had a winz top up. My casemanager once told me she had a fulltime job for me. Only trouble was, it was only 2 months. So I told her I wasn't giving up a permanent parttime job (which was going to become fulltime again, and did) for a temporary fulltime one. She told me she did not feel comfortable with that, and I told her she wasn't paid to be comfortable, she was paid to do the best for her clients She saw my point eventually, and we got on ok after that

You are right bobbity , the maximum disability allowance per week is $52.38.

Although we get the disability allowance, I didn't know there was a limit. How is one meant to survive if one has to have some really expensive drug to survive? Do they just starve instead?
I believe winz can top up a disability allowance with a special benefit, it does not cover the whole cost though only a percentage of the over and above $52.38 per week.
I agree that some drugs are expensive I have a daughter on a benefit and some of her prescription drugs are not subsidized even with everything winz can give her, her chemist tries to get them paid for by the hospital I think.

If you on a benefit/disability all. and you need expensive meds Dr. can apply to the health dept. for this.
sapphire03 & booklover, That's good to hear. One of the major problems with WINZ (depending on who your case manager is) is that they don't always give you ALL the information unless you specifically ask for it. I remember a couple of years ago I had a friend that worked for "Workbridge" she had an enquiry from an ex gang member with a disability, as you can imagine he looked a fairly rough character. She asked him if WINZ had arranged I think it was 3 different programs or benefits he was entitled to as of right. He hadn't heard of any of them, so she took him back to WINZ herself and told the case worker. You will do this & this & this for this man NOW. I understand that the man is now a skilled worker earning a good income. She told us that when you have an interview at WINZ when you finish one last question you should ask is "Is there anything else I am entitled to?" If they don't answer correctly it is their job that goes on the line.

I think it disgusting that where there is one drug that will do the job that you have to either go without or beg for help to pay for them. One of the drugs I am on is more expensive that the Pharmac approved list but my doctor has got me an exception because I am on a high dose and it is now funded. If I have to get prescriptions filled elsewhere they have to contact my normal chemist to get the approval number. If you need this expensive drug they should have to fund it for you in some way either from WINZ or the DHB.
