While living in Australia I first came accross this plant known there as the Oysterplant it's correct name I believe is Acanthus Mollis another common name for it is bears breeches

I remember as a child this growing in our garden...its was always know as the frog plant.

Guer, I purchased something like what you described from the local Hospice's trading table. They cost me $15 for a pair. The are made out of lined, stiffened fabric (maybe upholstery fabric).

I don't use them to protect myself from rose thorns, but creepy crawlies. I can't stand bugs and I feel quite safe weeding amongst the shrubbery with my arms protected right up to my elbows!
