Does anyone have any helpful remedies for helping a 90 year old get some of her taste buds back so she can enjoy her food again? sad She is finding it difficult to get enthused about eating because she cannot tell what the taste of anything is, except she can tell if it is a little sweet or a little sour. Any helpful suggested would be appreciatedwink

My mother is 93 and has the same problem. I have found that colour and presentation of a meal encourages her to eat. She has a tiny appetite but if the meal is colourful, it seems to encourage her appetite. smile

Thanks so much Supergold. My friend lives on her own and does her own cooking and she does try everything - trying to find some taste. However, she now has an appointment with an ENT specialist so hopefully he will be able to help. Time will tell.

colorful, soft, small quantities and soft music in the back ground. just remember at an older age we dont need much food at all, so never panic, fluids is the harder thing to get into them, so little often is a good motto. taste isnt there for them, so visual is everything, and if you are there, tell them what the meal consists of so they can imagine.

I recently had all my upper teeth extracted and a temporary denture inserted pending implant treatment. While I expected some difficulties with a new denture I was totally unprepared for substantially losing my sense of taste. Food just did not taste the same anymore, indeed hardly tasted at all, and naturally this impacted on my desire for food. While it was great for weight loss, I really missed the joy of eating. Thankfully I solved the problem entirely by getting a whole new set of implanted teeth to replace the upper denture. While the treatment is outrageously expensive in NZ I went to the Philippines and saved at least 80%. Visit www.halfpricedentistry.com for details.
